Saying Goodbye to Germany
I didn’t think saying goodbye to Germany would be difficult. It certainly seemed like a no-brainer in February when we were huddled in our cold, dark apartment wishing that we could at least say that we were saving money. As Spring set in, however, Wiesbaden came alive, the sun returned, and Germans started to catch World Cup fever.
We aren’t football (soccer) fans, but being there was a wonderful experience. We had a beer-garden outside of our house and we could feel the energy radiating up towards our apartment. If it is too loud to sleep, go join the party, right? That is what we did. And what a party it was. The streets were filled with elated Germans and Italians. Every cafe had a TV and the beer flowed freely. It was great to be in little Wiesbaden where most of the excitement was coming from locals.
In Frankfurt, where all the tourists were flocking to, it was more like the olympics. A great site to see to be sure, but too much of it reminded me of hot nights at disneyland wishing to escape the crowds and $5 cokes.
We’ve left Germany now, and settled for Romania, where the winters promise to be even colder and the work much harder. There’s no beer-garden downstairs, but at least we don’t have to pay for heat.
[update: Pictures of our last weeks in germany are now available in the new photo gallery.]
